Insight interAsia participated in a panel discussion sponsored by the Economist Corporate Network. The excellent half-day seminar at the Four Season Hotel in Singapore discussed the Economist’s Asia-Pacific regional strategic forecast and then had a panel focusing on electronics trends in Asia.

The meeting announcement:

It’s often suggested that the defining economic trend of our age as the shift in power and influence away from the developed world to the emerging economies. Investors certainly bought that story last year, with investment inflows to emerging markets hitting record levels in 2010. But this year is proving that the story isn’t quite so simple.

The rapid rise of emerging markets—coupled with weakness in the West—is causing numerous challenges. Quite apart from the feuding between nations that always accompanies a transfer of power, inflation is becoming more of an issue (caused just as much by rapid growth in the East as by policies in the weaker West). Rising demand for scarce commodities is a related concern. So too is domestic politics. The situation in the Middle East underscores the need to distinguish diligently between different emerging markets—with important implications for Asia. Our core view for the global economy is still good, but major risks remain. Join us to discuss the global outlook, what lies ahead for Asia, and what differentiates different markets as they march towards a new world order.

We’ll also host a discussion about the trends re-shaping Asia’s electronics sector—a vast and enormously important industry for the region. What does the rise of Asia, rising wealth and wages, and rising volatility, mean for the sector?

This was an excellent forum and we recommend our clients and network contacts to attend upcoming Economist Corporate Network events.

Insight interAsia’s managing director, Robert Haak, was recently quoted in the Wall Street Journal in an excellent article about inflation in Asia, with particular focus on the tight labor market in high technology industries.

The government of Singapore’s accounting standards body began a new policy on 01 January 2011 which redefines SME and allows companies meeting certain criteria to follow less restrictive reporting requirements (referred to colloquially as “small GAAP”).

Insight interAsia Singapore staff recently attended a seminar on this issue because many of our clients interested in establishing a local presence will be subject to such reporting requirements. Using small GAAP for a start-up operation in Singapore can greatly simplify the paperwork and lower the cost of accounting labor required by 50% over traditional large GAAP.

The seminar was sponsored by the Singapore International Chamber of Commerce, the British Chamber of Commerce, and the American Chamber of Commerce. We thank the organizers for their support.

Insight interAsia recently attended the annual Semicon Korea expo in Seoul. The event now takes place alongside of the Solarcon show.

Of course, Semicon Korea is largely aimed at supplying equipment and materials to Samsung and Hynix, both of which we know well.

MEMS companies are increasingly displaying their products and services at Semicon shows and Semicon Korea is no exception. Several MEMS companies (some which we represent) were present and interest at their booths were strong.

This year’s Semicon Korea was better attended than 2010′s show and the overall mood was up, as well, as local manufacturers were reporting strong growth in sales and increased CAPEX spending for 2011 and 2012.

Contact us if you re interested in increasing your sales in Korea.

This year, Insight interAsia’s booth at Semicon Japan was in the MEMS section of the Emergent Technologies area (booth M-19, Hall 6).

We saw an increase in the number of visitors compared to last year’s show, which was during the global economic crisis and semiconductor market slowdown. SEMI told us the number of visitors is 10% higher than 2009 but it seemed to our staff that the number should be somewhat higher.

Our booth saw significant traffic as smaller Japanese companies are looking for ways to export their products and services–and we can help them do that. We also met several non-Japanese companies that want to import into Japan and our local staff discussed with them how we can assist.

Many visitors stopped by our booth to learn about the non-Japanese products we represent. With the Japanese yen so strong right now–and projected to remain strong in 2011–Japanese customers find foreign suppliers (especially from the USA) to be particularly cost-effective.

It was a good Semicon show for IIA and we thank SEMI staff for their ongoing support. The next SEMI event will participate in will be Semicon Korea in January 2011. Then, in July 2011, we will have a booth at Semicon West in San Francisco’s Moscone Center.

Regarding future trade show appearances, we are also actively recruiting organizations to join the USA pavilion at the “nano tech 2011″ expo in Tokyo, which will be held during 16-18 February at Tokyo’s Big Sight.

IIA staff will attend the Nanotech Innovation Summit in Washington, DC which will be held during 08-10 December 2010 at the Gaylord Convention Center.

We look forward to seeing you at one of our events in 2011!
